BAD CHECKS: “Let’s make them ‘off limits’ in Perry County”

Thousands of dollars are lost each year by businesses in Perry County as a result of bad checks. Because of the volume of checks that are returned non-sufficient funds and no account, Perry County Prosecuting Attorney Robert (“Bob”) Collins established a Check Collection Department within the Prosecutor’s Office to help businesses in Perry County reduce the amount of lost revenue, to collect bad check debts, and to prosecute those who knowingly or intentionally violate the law.

The Prosecutor’s Check Collection Department has collected half a million dollars for businesses in Perry County since May 1999. (see stats)

Prevention, collection and prosecution are best accomplished by strict adherence to the check acceptance polices and identification procedures. Checks returned for non-sufficient funds are treated differently from checks that are forged, stolen, or have no account. If the merchant accepts a check in a careless manner, i.e. cannot identify the passer of the check or has accepted a check that cannot be prosecuted, the police and the Prosecutor’s Office will not be able to help you. So please follow the policies and procedures set forth to help reduce the amount of lost revenue, help collect lost revenue, and help prosecute bad check cases.
